The Ocean

I take my foot and dip it in
Shivers start to come from my skin
I let the feeling of cold be
I see the waved crash before me

Looking out to see whats afar
What is that I see? A sand bar?
Little creatures all in the sea
I see the waves crash before me

Getting out I sit on the sand
I warm myself up on the land
Rubbing my hands against my knees
I see the waves crash before me

Which way to go? draft

Every decision we make affects us in some way whether it’s in the heat of the moment of for the rest of our lives. Sometimes we need to fend for ourselves rather then look out for others. The decisions we make are unpredictable of how it helps us in the future. Somewhere down the road in life, the decisions we make can make us or break us. In the Old Man in the Sea, Santiago makes a decision to have others live their lives and dreams rather then him being able to live out his own.

Santiago decides not to let the young boy come with him on his fishing trip even though the boy insists because he looks up and respects Santiago, only wanting to help him out. Santiago is a very unselfish man and just wants what is best for the young boy and thinks he should go with another boat, even if later on he wishes he had the boys help. “Santiago, the boy said to him as they climbed the bank where the skiff was hauled up. I could go with you again (10). The thoughtful choice Santiago made for the young boy not to go made him not be able to live a dream. He knows he did make the right decision though and by catching this fish by himself would make him feel powerful and strong, the feeling of being able to conquer anything. He knew he needed to stay optimistic and confident of himself.

If only Santiago had help from the young boy he wouldn’t have been in the frustrating situations he got himself into. If only he had some help, his problems could have been much easier and he may not have struggled so much. The great difficulty of catching the marlin made Santiago tired, lonely, and in very much pain. Being out on the boat for days with no one around him must have been forlorn. There was no one to talk to and no one by him side to be able to assist him with his problems. Santiago was used to being alone but he was willing to do anything to catch this fish. After working so hard for days he couldn’t have just given up, he was too devoted and instead he fought through it. It meant being a hero, and being looked upon by his peers if he caught this fish. He was once a champion, but not any longer. “For a long time after that everyone had called him The Champion...” (70). If only he could live it out one more time he knew it would be the greatest feeling in the world.

Santiago had gone through much pain trying to catch the fish that would make him the hero. His hands had cramped and his neck was torn down from holding the rope on it so long. If only he had someone by his side, they could take over letting Santiago take a rest. “’If the boy were here he could rub my hands for me and loosen it from the forearm, he thought,’” (62). No matter what kind of pain he was in he was devoted to his work. Although he would have liked the boys help and resented his decision, he knew he made the right choice by having the boy live out his life. Santiago had not caught many fish and only wanted the boy to be successful considering how much he had been there for him and how sincere he had been. It meant so much to Santiago that the boy always wanted to help him out and that someone cared for him, but he knew he had to give at least something back to the boy and not have the boy be stuck with him on a boat that hadn’t caught a fish in 87 days.

In the end, Santiago had been beat. He had caught the fish of his dreams and although the objective was to bring it all back, only a piece of the disjointed fish was left to show to his people. Being once so anxious to show his catching, he did not have the same feeling any longer. He worked so hard and made a decision to stay with the fish no matter what, and have no help. This may have been a frantic, stressful fight, but it made him feel confident knowing how close he came. Every decision we made may affect us in the long run, so we need to choose sometimes if we need to help our self or others.

What would you do for love?

Liam and Mia had been together since the beginning of high school. Tonight was their graduation, and they had to decide their future together. Liam had received a scholarship for football to BU while Mia had been the number one student in her class and decided to follow Liam and his dreams to BU so they could be together. Mia had no idea about Liam's plan so they could be with each other forever.
The classic graduation music played in everyone's ears, and all of the graduates started walking two by two down the aisle. Speeches were made and one by one students were receiving their diplomas and moving one step forward into the rest of their lives. As Liam was receiving his diploma, he suddenly stopped and asked if he could say a few words.
"Mia, will you please come up to the stage for one moment." Liam asked.
Not knowing what was going on, Mia did as Liam had asked her to do so wondering what was going to happen.
"What are you doing?" Mia questioned him.
"We have been together for almost four years now." Liam had started saying.
"I cannot imagine my life without you and since we are going to school together, why not make it official?" Liam finished saying.
She had a shocked countenance and tears were running down Mia's face as Liam pulled out the ring.
"Mia, will you marry me?" Liam popped the question.
A strange guttural came from Mia as she was lost for words since she was so overwhelmed. Cheers filled the auditorium and you could feel everyone's excitement in the air.
"Congratulations to the class of 2009!" the principal screamed.
It was after graduation and Liam and Mia's friend Scott was having an after party. There were about fifty kids there and screams were everywhere. Laughter came from everyone as they did not know what they were talking about since some had drunk too much alcohol. Mia and Liam had not drank that much in high school, but tonight they had graduated and thought to themselves, why not? At around 2 in the morning Liam and Mia decided to leave. They both thought they were fine to drive and didn't realize how much alcohol they consumed. It was foggy that night, worse than most. They did not know they were putting themselves in such a grave situation. It had taken one night for Liam and Mia to lose everything that was ahead of them.
"Beep, beep, beep," was the sound Liam heard as he woke up. Nurses were running crazy all around him and he realized he was in the hospital. He made a petulant remark to his nurse and told her to get the hell out of his room.
"What happened, what am I doing here?" he asked his mother and father who were sitting right beside his bed.
"Son, you ran through a red light and crashed into another car, luckily the passenger from the other car is alright." Liam's mother had said as her voice was cracking.

"WHERE IS MIA?" Liam screamed from the top of his lungs.
His parents looked at one another and lamented. Liam started to reprimand. He ran into her room and prayed thinking that she had died, but was so thankful when she was laying there in front of him. He still did not know that Mia was now paralyzed shoulder down for the rest of her life. Mia laid there staring up at the ceiling. Liam ran over to her and grabbed her hand, but her hand did not grab back. A compunction came about him. Her body did not move a muscle, and then Liam had figured out he had just ruined her life. He threshed the wall and broke down at the thought she would never be the same again. It was his fault and all he could think about was why had he only had nothing but some cuts and contusions and his fiancé was now paralyzed. He felt nothing but guilt and anger. All he could do was rue the day he ever stepped foot into that car.
Mia lost her scholarship to BU since she was not able to attend college for a few more years. All Liam could do was feeling sorrow for Mia and blame himself but she told him they both shouldn't have been in the car that night. He had been lucky to not have lost his scholarship, and was still able to play football at BU. The only problem was Mia would not be there with him like their plan.
He knew he had to make a decision. It would either be to go to BU to further play football, or stay with Mia and be by her side. Was he going to follow his dream or his heart?
"I'm staying here with you Mia." Liam told her.
"No, absolutely not. There is no way you are giving up your dream for me your giving up everything ahead of you." Mia cried out. She wanted to try and clout him to go to BU as best as she could.
“I can always go in a couple years with you, I want to stay here, and college would not be the same without you." Liam explained.
The decision was asserted and Liam stayed with Mia. Only a couple weeks after the accident, Mia was able to move her arms even though the doctors said she could never be able to again. Each and every day Mia would work hard to be able to walk again. Maybe, just maybe a miracle would occur.
On April 2nd 2012, three years after the accident, Mia and Liam finally got married. His altruistic decision to stay with Mia and the quandary situation they had been through only made them closer. She had gotten the miracle she was looking for and was able to walk once again with the help of a walker. They decided to go to BU the following fall and proceed their dreams like they were once going to do so long ago.

They had been through so much together and would soon both go to BU with one another as they had planned all along.
